Developed in 1920 as a village well, Sunjaga Well provided an important source of drinking water until the modern water supply system was established.  It was also used to wash vegetables, as drinking water for livestock, and served as the Nbuga (spring to take water for baby’s first bath).  On January 2 of the lunar calendar, people visit the well to report the birth of their child and spread out their offerings to celebrate the New Year.  The water reservoir is constructed of coursed masonry using limestone blocks, and has a concrete roof and stone-paved washing area in the front.  In 1999, it was registered the first Nationally Designated Tangible Cultural Asset in Okinawa for its superb stone masonry structure.
